2017 Year in Review

It’s that time of the year again… time to see what I accomplished this year, what I didn’t get to, and what I did instead of doing the things I said I was going to do.

So last year I said my goals for 2017 were:

1. Georgian Belle – as I said above, finish it up for Visioncon.
Did I?! Not really. I redid the wig, twice – once for Visioncon, and then deciding that I didn’t like the shape of it totally redid it again before we did a white backdrop shoot.

I’m still not happy with it. I think I need to just buckle down and sew in the skirt pick-ups I’ve always wanted to do… stop being scared of the velvet and just do it. And I think I’m going to get a totally new wig.
I also think I need to remove the rose at the neckline. I think it’s crowding that whole area and making me look squished.
I have a lot of thoughts about this costume.

2. Dolores – I’m also aiming for VisionCon on this one but if everything goes smoothly, I may have it done in time for SFCC at the end of Jan.
I did this!! And I did have it done in time for SFCC.

I was fairly happy with it, considering it was a quick side project… I need to replace that wig (looks awful on me) and try to fix that too-big neckline/gaping issue.

3. Bespin Leia – duuuuh. Trying to have it done for Star Wars Celebration.
I FINALLY DID IT!! This stupid costume has been on my “want-to-list” since 2003. 2003. I bought fabric in 2006. It’s finally, finally done.

I’m so so so happy to finally have it done. It has a few little issues – my yoke is a little big, etc. But I’m happy with it and I can finally say I’ve finished all of Leia’s OT costumes.

4. Mon Mothma – maybe. Been thinking about it for a while.
I did it!

5. Ghostbusters – Ash and I are talking about doing Ghostbuster costumes… I order Holtzmann glasses with my birthday money! I don’t expect this to be a quick project tho.
We never got around to this. Ash did a ton of research. I got my Holtzmann glasses. But that was about it.

6. Pink Sleeping Beauty – another one I’ve been thinking about for a while. Well I ever get to it? Time will only tell
Nope.

7. Finish that dang Elsa corset – I started this ages ago, been working on it off and on all year, I was going to do a giveaway with it and I just haven’t had time to finish it.
No, but I have made some good progress just in the past few weeks.

Had to order more sequins. I wanted to do a giveaway with it when my IG hit 2000 followers, but that has come and gone, so I guess maybe it’ll be a giveaway for 2500?

8. Finish Queen Arianna – like I said above there’s not much left to do on it. I just don’t have an end goal for where to wear it.
Nope, haven’t even looked at it.

So what else did I do this year?

Well, Bespin Leia took a huge chunk of time, for 3 months solid I did nothing but embroider every moment of the day when I wasn’t at work, sleeping, or eating. And once it was finally done I didn’t feel like doing ANYTHING for a good month – and then it was Dcon time. So for the first half of the year it was just Dolores and Bespin Leia. So after that…

Wonder Woman swimsuit

I needed a new swimsuit this year… I had this extra fabric sitting around, so I made this. It’s not perfect because I made it in like, 2 afternoons, but it was fun.

Donna Troy

I made a Donna Troy suit/collar/belt as a commission over the summer!

Scrump

I helped Ash make her Scrump doll for her Lilo costume for Dragon Con. (I just machine-sewed the seams together, she did everything else.)

New Amidala Hairpiece

I made a new hairpiece for my Amidala costume! That counts, right? Considering I’ve been trying to make this thing since 2010, I think it does.

Medieval Leia

A last-minute addition to my Dragon Con line-up… threw this together in a weekend. Fun project!

TFA Leia

I was thinking about maaaaaybe doing this one for Dragon Con and then I won Custom Wig Co’s May the 4th contest and they made this amazing wig for me!! So it became a definite. I’m fairly happy with the outer robe, but the inner dress was a disaster and I’m going to be remaking it in the next couple of weeks.

Lucy

I’ve wanted to do this for so long!! I decided this was the year.

Rey Bag

I wanted a new bag for Dcon to put my new patch on, so I put this together… I really should have interfaced it because it’s a little floppy, but it worked for the con!

Nun costume

Commission for a friend for Halloween! (and thanks to my husband for modeling it for me, LOL)

End of Empire Leia

Ok so not really new but this year, we did take some pics of my Leia costume with the End of Empire hairstyle just for posterity.

Leia Skywalker

I had this idea to wear Kevin’s Luke tunic, belt and boots with my Leia buns. Turned out cute. Again nothing I actually made this year though LOL

Luke tunic

Speaking of Luke tunics, I had to scramble and make a new Luke tunic for Kevin over the summer. It’s linen and it doesn’t sit exactly right. I had to make this one because his nice, new tunic (as seen on me above) completely disappeared off the face of the planet. And he needed to be Luke the next day.
I did eventually find his tunic when I cleaned out Chase’s office – it was stuck inside an old Apple monitor he’d been wanting to turn into an aquarium. Why was it in there? I have no idea. But at least Kevin has his GOOD tunic back and this crappy last minute one can just be a backup.

Leia dress

My new Leia isn’t done YET… still have new belt and boots to tackle… but the dress is pretty much done, so it falls into 2017 accomplishments 🙂

Goals for next year…
1. Finish new Leia
Like I said, dress is done. Dad is going to help with my belt again, and I’m hoping to buy new base boots to mod in the next couple of weeks.

2. New TFA Leia underdress
I think the next round of fabric I get will be the thing. Should be quick to do.

3. New Luke updates for Kevin
After wearing his Luke stuff I realized he really needs updated accessories. New belt, new pants, and especially new boots. So I’m going to try to do that for him next year.

4. Padme Lake Dress, mark 5

I was able to successfully remove the bad dye job from my old Edith fabric and I thought… hey this would make a nice Padme lake overdress now. So I’m hoping to do that next year. Need to get some more of that same fabric first.

5. Boushh upgrade
Not a total remake, but we got my new helmet!

So that’s going to be a slow winter project for us. I’m going to also update my turtleneck, my cummerbund, my belts, my pants, and my boot covers. All just little tweaks, some extra weathering, get it all up to date. I’m excited!

6. Amidala
I don’t know which yet… I have like 3 I’m thinking about. It’s probably going to come down to what fabric I can find (and that is affordable).

7. TLJ Leia

Again I don’t know which — either the shorter collar version or the Vanity Fair version… again it’s probably just going to depend on what fabric I can find.
Gosh I wish we had a decent fabric store within driving distance.

Ok so that was a lot of Star Wars, what am I planning that’s not Star Wars? LOL…

8. Mina (Bram Stoker’s Dracula)

I’d so love to do this… but it’s going to depend on time/budget/if I pick one of the other large scale projects I’ve had in mind instead?

9. Tinkerbell and Peter Pan
I’m not posting a pic of these two because I think you know what they look like, LOL. I want to do this as a duo with Kevin. I think I could do both pretty quickly, just have to see if it works within budgets.

10. Daenerys

I’m kinda behind on the GoT costume train. Really not a lot of the costumes grab me and scream “MAKE ME” – I like a lot of them they just don’t strike that chord. But I’ve been leaning towards this one of Dany’s. Maybe.

11. A Big Ole Disney thing
I just haven’t decided which big ole Disney thing to do yet. There are two.

12. Lose weight
Ok real talk. Having a desk job instead of my previously very active job is finally catching up to me. I have gained more weight this year than I’d like to admit, and I’m at the heaviest I’ve ever been. I think part of it is a medication I started taking a couple of months ago – weight gain is a known side effect. But mostly it’s me being sedentary and not eating right. I’ve always yo-yoed within a certain range for most of my adult life, and for the first time I’m OUT of that range, and for the first time I’m running into some of my older costumes not fitting anymore. It sucks. So Chase & I both are going to change our diets and I’ve been focusing on just trying to be more active – I try to ride my bike after work several days a week, and I’d like to get that up to everyday if I can.
So that’s my really big goal for next year.
